Cultivating Self-Love & Self-Care: Definitions, Myths, Barriers, and Techniques
Self-love has emerged in the social media and wellness spaces in recent years as something that needs to be attained, and prior to this, it was discussed in mainstream spaces as either self-esteem or narcissism. There can be confusing messages about what self-love means and what we're actually supposed "to do". Yet there’s much more depth behind this idea and how the magic of self-love and its action-oriented counterpart, self-care, means that the more we connect to ourselves, the better quality and authentic connections we have with others. Drawing from my research on self-love and from workshops for non-profits and those in the helping profession, we'll meet for 90 minutes to explore:
What self-love and self-care is and is not - to you and within society
What barriers get in the way of experiencing both
How we can identify our needs and techniques to connect with ourselves and others
How setting boundaries is an act of love and care for ourselves and discuss a framework for asserting our boundaries
Prior to the workshop, please complete this 5-10minutes questionnaire (by January 15th) and bring a notebook to the workshop. It will be a fun time together, and I so look forward to seeing you there!
About Kelly Ziemer
Kelly first started researching self-love almost 5years ago for her PhD dissertation, but it was years before that she started to get curious about what the trend in #selflove was all about and what self-love actually meant. Since then, she has come to understand self-love as the idea of having a relationship with oneself and loves working with clients, students and colleagues to dive into this topic. Kelly has been a therapist-in the US and Netherlands-for nearly 15 years where she provides individual and group counseling to adolescents and adults with a specialization in CBT, mindfulness, and intuitive techniques. She is also an Assistant Professor in Developmental and Educational Psychology at Leiden University and a researcher with the University of Amsterdam's KiDLAB exploring educational inequality in partnership with Schools2030 Kyrgyzstan.
